Vinegar instead of laundry detergent?

Dr. Paul Saladino is one of my go-to guys for extreme living. He does things that are the antithesis of moderation. I almost use his advice as a divining rod to know what not to do. His latest advice is to replace your laundry detergent with white vinegar. It seems like a silly idea to me and would make your clothes smell.

But maybe I’m wrong. Doing a little searching online I ran across a post on Martha Stewart’s website where they also give advice on using vinegar but it’s not as extreme as Dr. Saladino’s. Here is what they say are the benefits.

  • Removes stains
  • Removes mildew
  • Eliminates odors
  • Softens clothes

Who knew? They seem to suggest to use vinegar in addition to detergent not in place of it because they say to add it to the fabric softener dispenser or during the rinse cycle. But they also give a couple warnings, which Dr. Saladino does not (maybe too much to ask for a less than 60 second video). Don’t use it with bleach as the combo can produce toxic fumes and don’t use it with elastic clothes because it will break down the elastics. Anyone following Dr. Saladino for any amount of time knows he doesn’t wear clothes with elastics. Only natural fibers for him!
